UltraTech Cement Limited, India’s foremost cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) company, has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly enhance the proportion of green energy in its overall energy mix, aiming for an impressive 85% by 2030. As an interim milestone, the company intends to triple its current green energy share, rising from 22% to 60% by the fiscal year 2025-26.
Mr. K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited, emphasized the company’s commitment to spearheading sustainability in the industry. Highlighting the pivotal role of green energy in decarbonization, he noted their consistent efforts in elevating the green energy mix over the years as a testament to their dedication to a cleaner, greener future.
With a vision to fulfill 100% of its electricity requirements through renewable sources by 2050 as part of the RE100 commitment, UltraTech is also a member of EP100, aiming to double its energy productivity. The company presently boasts 691 MW of green energy capacity, encompassing 262 MW of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS) and 429 MW of contracted renewable energy, constituting approximately 22% of its current energy needs.
UltraTech has adopted a holistic approach to reduce fossil fuel usage, incorporating initiatives such as embracing renewable energy sources and expanding WHRS. The company has declared its decision to refrain from further investments in thermal power capacity to align with its objective of diminishing reliance on fossil fuels.
In the pursuit of green manufacturing, UltraTech is exploring cutting-edge technologies for decarbonization, exemplified by its collaboration with Coolbrook, a Finnish technology and engineering company. The partnership aims to implement Coolbrook’s RotoDynamicHeaterTM (RDH) technology, utilizing electrification from renewable sources to eliminate the need for fossil fuels in cement production.
Additionally, in a bid to decrease the carbon footprint across its value chain, UltraTech is pioneering ‘Green Logistics.’ The company has introduced CNG/LNG trucks and committed to deploying 500 electric trucks and adding 1000 CNG/LNG vehicles in the 40-tonne category by June 2025 as part of the Government of India’s eFAST initiative. With over 390 CNG trucks and 50 LNG trucks operational across 17 manufacturing units, UltraTech plans to swiftly expand this initiative to other locations, contributing to a sustainable transport ecosystem.
