Tata Communications Soars Towards Net Zero: Joins Lufthansa’s Corporate SAF Program for Sustainable Air Travel

In a pioneering move, Tata Communications, a global digital ecosystem enabler, has become the first corporate customer in India to join Lufthansa Group’s Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) program. Tata Communications has made a significant bulk purchase of SAF to meet its corporate travel needs and expressed ongoing interest in annual investments in SAF. The SAF, derived from biogenic residues like used cooking oils, has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80%, positioning it as a crucial technology for sustainable air travel.

Lufthansa Group, a trailblazer in championing sustainable flying, ranks among the top 5 global customers in SAF. The airline offers diverse products to corporate clients, ranging from bulk SAF purchases to Sustainable Corporate Value Fares. This innovative fare structure allows corporate customers to offset 80% of their CO2 emissions through high-quality compensation projects, with the remaining 20% covered by SAF for intra-Europe traffic.

Tata Communications aligns with Lufthansa’s commitment to sustainability, integrating environmental, social, and ethical principles into its core business. Kim Bybjerg, Vice President and Head of Continental Europe at Tata Communications, emphasized the company’s dedication to addressing climate change, aiming for Net Zero by 2035 across global operations. By partnering with airlines like Lufthansa, Tata Communications seeks to offset travel emissions and actively support sustainable air travel initiatives.

The collaboration underscores Tata Communications’ role as a responsible corporate entity, providing hyperconnected solutions that enable customers to optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon footprints. The company’s commitment to sustainability is evident, with customers achieving 16 times the carbon emissions savings compared to Tata Communications’ operational emissions in FY 2023.

In line with its priority sustainability initiatives in the travel sector, Tata Communications is eager to contribute to a greener future for air travel. The partnership with Lufthansa Group marks a significant step towards achieving these shared sustainability goals.
