Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Optimistic About India’s Early Achievement of Net Zero Emissions Target

India’s Union Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, has voiced his belief that India might achieve its net-zero emissions target before the set deadline of 2070. Speaking at the 26th Energy Technology Meet, Puri suggested that the 2070 target might be “a little too long-term.” Under this goal, India aims to transition entirely to renewable energy sources by 2070.

Puri emphasized that India is rapidly moving towards an energy transition, with companies like GAIL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) eyeing an energy transition target of 2035 to 2040. This transition will involve shifting from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources and eventually to renewables.

The minister also highlighted that global uncertainties, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, can accelerate energy transitions towards biofuels and renewables. Puri stated that India would handle the Israel-Palestine situation with maturity and closely monitor developments, acknowledging that the region is crucial for global energy dynamics.

Puri discussed India’s progress in biofuel adoption, noting that the country has already achieved a 12% ethanol blending target, ahead of the 20% target set for 2025. He stressed that the international community is taking biofuels seriously, positioning them as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Regarding OPEC’s cut in crude oil production, Puri explained that while sufficient crude oil is available to meet current consumption levels, a reduction in supply is a sovereign decision. However, he underlined India’s commitment to accelerating its energy transition when necessary.

Puri warned against rising oil prices, stating that if prices exceed certain thresholds, they could fuel inflation, potentially leading to a situation similar to the 2008 financial crisis. He concluded by noting that India’s energy demand is set to account for 25% of global energy demand over the next two decades, underscoring the nation’s significance in the global energy landscape.
