In a concerted effort to accelerate their sustainability and decarbonization endeavors amid the global energy transition, PETRONAS, Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), Amazon, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced a collaborative partnership.
This collaborative endeavor aligns with PETRONAS’ commitment to providing affordable, low-carbon energy solutions while concurrently reducing the emissions footprint of its operations. Leveraging Gentari’s expertise in clean energy solutions, the collaboration also bolsters Amazon’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The partnership encompasses a multifaceted approach to sustainability, technological innovation, and socio-economic progress. Key areas of exploration include:
- Electrifying Amazon’s India Transportation Network: Gentari will play a pivotal role in decarbonizing Amazon’s Indian transportation network by collaborating with third-party delivery service partners to transition their vehicles to electric power. As part of its commitment, Amazon aims to deploy 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) within its Indian delivery fleet by 2025. Gentari will also provide electric vehicles and fleet management services to support Amazon’s third-party delivery partners in this transition.
- Advanced Plant of the Future: PETRONAS and AWS plan to design and construct a cutting-edge plant incorporating state-of-the-art technology, robotics, and automation solutions similar to those utilized in Amazon’s warehouses and facilities. This facility aims to scale PETRONAS’ ongoing research and development efforts, particularly in the production of microalgae oil as a sustainable feedstock for aviation fuel.
- Integration of Low-Carbon Solutions: Amazon will assess PETRONAS’ low-carbon and alternative fuel solutions for potential integration across various sectors, including mobility, stationary power applications, and carbon management.
- AWS Cloud Technology: PETRONAS will continue harnessing AWS cloud technology to enhance and expand its existing solutions, including SETEL (Malaysia’s first e-wallet for fuel purchases) and STEAR (a cloud-based logistics platform for the offshore industry).
- Workforce Development: AWS will contribute to upskilling both technical and non-technical PETRONAS employees, strengthening their digital literacy through AWS Training & Certification programs. This initiative aligns with AWS’ broader commitment to fostering a digitally proficient workforce in support of Malaysia’s digital economy.
According to PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology, Datuk Bacho Pilong, collaborations of this nature are essential in advancing the transition towards cleaner energy on a global scale. The partnership seeks to build a robust innovation ecosystem, inviting like-minded partners to join forces in realizing a sustainable future.
Gentari CEO, Sushil Purohit, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in driving change towards a cleaner, more sustainable future, aligning with Gentari’s commitment to clean energy solutions.
Conor McNamara, AWS ASEAN’s Managing Director, underlined the importance of innovation across industries to achieve a net-zero future and expressed AWS’ commitment to supporting climate and digitalization ambitions through technology and talent development.
This partnership signifies a collective stride towards a greener, more sustainable energy landscape, intertwining technological innovation, decarbonization efforts, and a commitment to a net-zero future.
